Practical mitigation options for phosphorus and sediment loss from winter–sown crops: an overview of contemporary methods

چکیده

Phosphorus (P) and suspended sediment (SS) play a pivotal role in influencing water quality and biodiversity and, as a result, controlling the transfer of these important diffuse pollutants from land to water, represents a priority task for catchment managers and stakeholders (Kronvang et al., 2005a). This review briefly summarises the environmental and legislative context regarding phosphorus and suspended sediment losses from land to water, outlines the pathways for such losses, and reviews contemporary research evidence on mitigation methods for controlling these losses to surface water systems. Mitigation methods discussed include fertiliser and manure management, dietary strategies, tillage methods, residue management, cover (catch) cropping, tramline management, gateway locations, strategic management along river margins, and the use of wetlands and retention ponds. The review concludes with a synthesis which considers different mitigation options in the context of catchment management for sustainable water quality.

Final Report: Defra PE0206 Field Testing of Mitigation Options

1. Executive summary The Mitigation Options for Phosphorus and Sediment (MOPS) project aimed to investigate the efficacy and cost-effectiveness of different in-field mitigation options which could be used to control diffuse pollution losses in surface runoff from arable fields under combinable crops. In order to achieve this, a literature review, field experimentation, and economic analysis wer...

Effect of soil erosion on available phosphorus losses in a Hyrcanian watershed

One of the most important main environmental problems is soil erosion and its affects. Eutrophication, low oxygen levels and `high nutrient (nitrogen and phosphorus) concentrations in reservoirs, channel and other water courses, is a common water pollution feature. Phosphorus (P) is one of the major plant nutrients and also the major nutrients controlling eutrophication of surface water. The ai...

Application of the FARMSCOPER tool for assessing agricultural diffuse pollution mitigation methods across the Hampshire Avon Demonstration Test Catchment, UK

Agricultural diffuse pollution is a significant contributor to water and air quality in many catchments and the need to control harmful emissions remains paramount for government policy. In England, the Demonstration Test Catchments (DTCs) have been established to provide a basis for testing on-farm mitigation measures using collaborative multi-partner research and some of this work is targetin...

Phosphorus forms of the surface sediment in the Iranian coast of the Southern Caspian Sea

Sediments from the Southern Caspian Sea, located in Iranian coast were examined on the basis of P-fractionation (five forms of phosphorus) by a sequential extraction scheme. Ninety-six surface sediment samples (for each season with triplicate) were collected from eight sampling transects in 10 and 100 m depths during summer and winter in 2010-2011. The result indicated that the most abundant fo...

Soil Sampling Methods for Phosphorus – Spatial Concerns

Purpose of This Publication Knowledge of soil phosphorus (P) levels is an essential component of nutrient management planning for crop production and for tools that assess the risk of P loss from agricultural fields. Historically, soil P testing has been used to estimate P availability for crops and is now being used directly or as a component of P indices to assess the risk of P loss from fiel...
